Jazz as a State of Mind: Michael Morgan, pianist Tammy Hall, saxophonist Jason Hainsworth, and San Francisco Principal Bass Scott Pingel and Principal Timpani Edward Stephan share how for them, the give-and-take of Jazz creates community and freedom of expression.
The San Francisco Symphony’s COVID-19 response has been guided by a belief that we must “plan for the worst while hoping for the better.” However, in accordance with guidelines from the State of California and City of San Francisco, we have made the difficult decision to cancel all San Francisco Symphony concerts through December 31, 2020.
San Francisco Symphony CEO Mark C. Hanson notes, “While we are deeply disappointed to not present the exciting lineup of live concerts we had planned for Fall 2020, including the start of Esa-Pekka Salonen’s tenure as Music Director and a festival of events featuring our eight Collaborative Partners, we know this action is necessary in order to ensure the health and safety of our Orchestra, Chorus, staff, and audiences.”

The Whistle Song by MTT
We’re pleased to present an uplifting musical gift from Music Director Michael Tilson Thomas. “I wanted to share this song with you so much, and very thankfully my colleagues at the San Francisco Symphony agreed to play along,” says MTT. Composed while sheltering-in-place at home this spring, MTT’s “Whistle Song” is inspired by a sprightly melody he used to whistle as a child with his father Ted. This recording is presented in a joint performance with MTT and San Francisco Symphony musicians from their homes.
