Biography

Hanno Müller-Brachmann began his musical training in Basel and Freiburg. He attended Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau's lied classes in Berlin and is himself now a professor at the Musikhochschule in Karlsruhe. Mr. Müller-Brachmann made his operatic debut in 1996 in Telemann's Orpheus under René Jacobs at the Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin, where he became a member of the ensemble in 1998. His concert appearances have included Bach’s Saint Matthew Passion with the London Philharmonic, Bach’s Saint John Passion with the Monteverdi Choir and Orchestra and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the Philharmonia Orchestra, and Mozart’s Requiem with the Camerata Salzburg. He made his Carnegie Hall debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He has given recitals with pianists such as Burkhard Kehring, Philippe Jordan, Malcolm Martineau, András Schiff, Graham Johnson, and Daniel Barenboim.

Mr. Müller-Brachmann’s future engagements include his debut with the Bavarian Radio Symphony in Haydn’s The Creation in Munich and at the Salzburg Festival; a European tour of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and Szymanowski’s Stabat Mater with the Berlin Philharmonic, commemorating the twenty-fifth anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall; Beethoven’s Missa solemnis with the Bavarian Radio Symphony; Bach’s B minor Mass with the Cleveland Orchestra; and a return to the operatic stage as Papageno in Mozart’s The Magic Flute with the Budapest Festival Orchestra in Budapest, Abu Dhabi, and New York. He makes his San Francisco Symphony debut with these performances.

Mr. Müller-Brachmann’s recordings include works of Schubert for Harmonia Mundi and Naxos Records and Schumann for Hyperion labels, The Magic Flute conducted by Claudio Abbado for Deutsche Grammophon, which won Gramophone’s Best Opera Recording of the Year, Bach’s Saint John Passion with John Eliot Gardiner, and Bach's Saint Matthew Passion, conducted by Riccardo Chailly for Decca. Mr. Müller-Brachmann’s most recent recording is a DVD of Britten’s War Requiem with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and Andris Nelsons on Unitel.
