Philippe Jordan
Philippe Jordan has been music director of the Vienna State Opera since September 2020. He opened his first season with premieres of Madama Butterfly, Parsifal, and Macbeth, alongside revivals of Der Rosenkavalier and Le nozze di Figaro. In 2021–22, new productions of Don Giovanni, Wozzeck, and Tristan und Isolde followed. In the current season he conducts premieres of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Salome, and Le nozze di Figaro, as well as revivals of Don Giovanni, Der Rosenkavalier, Tristan und Isolde, Wozzek, and Parsifal. Guest appearances this season include dates with the Orchestre national de France, Munich Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and Vienna Philharmonic at the Konzerthaus.
Mr. Jordan was musical director of the Opéra national de Paris between 2009 and 2021, conducting numerous premieres and revivals, including Moses und Aron, La damnation de Faust, Der Rosenkavalier, Samson et Dalila, Lohengrin, Don Carlos, Les Troyens, Don Giovanni, Prince Igor, and a concert version of Wagner’s Ring cycle. From 2014–2020 he served as principal conductor of the Vienna Symphony. Highlights of his tenure included complete cycles of Schubert’s symphonies and Beethoven’s symphonies and piano concertos, and a cycle of J.S. Bach’s major masses and oratorios. He made his San Francisco Symphony debut in October 2007.
