Witness a brooding and darkly beautiful collection of works is born from deeply personal situations. Written the year of his death, Mendelssohn’s String Quartet No. 6 is a piece of the composer’s broken heart. Its elegance is tempered by an emotional angst that reveals a profound despair at the death of his cherished sister’s passing a few months earlier. Tchaikovsky’s Piano Trio was written in memory of his dear friend and mentor Nicolai Rubenstein (as well as played at Tchaikovsky’s own funeral), and though a funeral march, is resplendent with breathtaking lyricism.
