Born in Tianjin, China, bass-baritone Shenyang studied at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. He is an alumnus of the Metropolitan Opera Lindemann Young Artist Development Program and of the Juilliard School Opera Center. Winner of the 2007 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition, he was also a 2008 winner of the Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award, and a 2010 winner of the Montblanc New Voices Award at Stars of the White Nights Festival. He made his San Francisco Symphony debut in 2011. His 2014 performance of Beethoven’s Mass in C major with the Symphony and Michael Tilson Thomas was recorded for future release on SFS Media. The 2014-15 season includes house debuts with both the Zurich Opera House and the Washington National Opera as Alidoro in La Cenerentola. He returns to the International Bachakademie Stuttgart for Handel’s Messiah and to Beijing’s National Center for the Performing Arts and the Orquesta Nacional de España for Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.
