Biography

Horn

Jonathan Ring joined the San Francisco Symphony horn section in 1991 after previously holding positions in the Columbus Symphony and the Fort Wayne Philharmonic. He is an active chamber musician and has appeared on numerous recordings and television, video game, and motion picture soundtracks.

In 1995, 2011, and 2015, Mr. Ring performed at the International Horn Society Symposium, and he has toured as a member of Summit Brass. In 2003 and 2005, he was invited to represent the United States as a member of the Super World Orchestra in Japan, an ensemble comprising top orchestral musicians from around the globe. In 2022, he performed and recorded with the National Brass Ensemble. His summer activities have included the New College Music Festival, Spoleto Festival, Tanglewood, Colorado Philharmonic, and the Grand Teton Music Festival.

Mr. Ring serves on the faculty of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and he frequently gives masterclasses and presentations on the history of the horn using instruments from his collection. He is also an accomplished keyboard player, composer, and arranger, with an avid interest in pop, rock, new age, and jazz. He served as producer of two recordings by Bay Brass, including Sound The Bells!, which was nominated for a Grammy Award.

A graduate of Northwestern University, Mr. Ring studied with Dale Clevenger, Robert Fries, and Jerry Peel. He now lives in Piedmont, California, with his wife, Maya Rath. They have two grown sons.
