First Violin

Born in Munich, violinist Viviane Hagner is a celebrated orchestral soloist, recitalist, and chamber music collaborator who champions new works by contemporary composers such as Unsuk Chin and Simon Holt. She made her international debut at age twelve, and a year later participated in the joint concert of the Israel and Berlin Philharmonics, conducted by Zubin Mehta.

Ms. Hagner has appeared with such orchestras as the Berlin Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, New York Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Leipzig Gewandhaus, Pittsburgh Symphony, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Munich Philharmonic and Philharmonia, in partnership with conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Daniel Barenboim, Ricardo Chailly, Pinchas Zukerman, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Christoph Eschenbach, Kent Nagano, Andris Nelsons, and David Zinman. Recent concert highlights include engagements with Staatskapelle Dresden and Christopher Eschenbach performing Schumann’s Violin Concerto, the Montreal, Vancouver, San Diego, Vienna, Lahti, and Singapore symphonies, the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic performing Unsuk Chin’s Violin Concerto, Tonkünstler Orchestra, and a European tour with the Taiwan Philharmonic Orchestra (NSO).

Ms. Hagner’s 2017-18 season takes her across Europe and Asia in both major concert halls and intimate spaces. She opens the Nuremberg Symphony’s season with Walton’s Violin Concerto with Deye Lin, performs the Asia premiere of a new violin concerto by Anders Hillborg with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, Beethoven’s Violin Concerto with Staatskapelle Weimar in Barcelona and Madrid, Brahms’s Violin Concerto with the Hallé Orchestra, and the Mozart Concertante in London with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. As a recitalist, Ms. Hagner offers programs of Bartók, Debussy, Messiaen, and Franck with pianists Rudolf Meister and Nicole Hagner throughout Europe. She makes her San Francisco Symphony debut at this performance.

A committed chamber musician, Ms. Hagner co-founded and holds the title of Artistic Director of the Krzyżowa Music Festival, a European chamber music festival in its third season. The festival culminates in a summer tour to Poland and Germany. She has also been a featured artist at renowned American and international festivals such as Schleswig-Holstein, Festspiele Mecklenberg-Vorpommern, Salzburg Easter Festival, Marlboro, Ravinia, Santa Fe, and Mostly Mozart; and has appeared at Amsterdam's Concertgebouw, Barcelona's Palau de la Musica, Berlin Konzerthaus, Köln Philharmonie, London's Wigmore, and Queen Elizabeth Halls, and New York's 92nd Street Y.
