Conductor

Composer Justin Hurwitz graduated from Harvard University in 2008, where he studied music composition and orchestration. He has enjoyed a fruitful partnership with director Damien Chazelle, having composed the songs and score for Mr. Chazelle's 2010 feature debut, Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench; the original score for Whiplash (2014), which earned a Grammy nomination; and the music for La La Land, which earned two Academy Awards, two Golden Globes, two Critics Choice Awards, and the BAFTA for film music. Mr. Hurwitz most recently composed original music for Mr. Chazelle’s First Man, for which he won a 2019 Golden Globe and was named to the 2019 Academy Award Shortlist. He makes his San Francisco Symphony debut as conductor and composer in these performances.
