Combining versatile artistry with a probing intellect and commanding stage presence, American classical singer JULIA BULLOCK has appeared on preeminent stages across the world. An innovative curator, she is a Collaborative Partner at the San Francisco Symphony after being an artist-in-residence in 2019–20, and has also been an artist-in-residence at the Guildhall School and Metropolitan Museum of Art. Named a 2021 Artist of the Year by Musical America, she is a prominent voice of social consciousness.

This season, Ms. Bullock stars in Michel van der Aa’s opera Upload, which had its staged premieres at the Bregenzer Festspiele, Dutch National Opera, and New York’s Park Avenue Armory. She also debuts in the title role of Theodora at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden opposite Joyce DiDonato. Previously she debuted with San Francisco Opera in the world premiere of Girls of the Golden West; Santa Fe Opera in Doctor Atomic; Festival d’Aix-en-Provence and Dutch National Opera in The Rake’s Progress; the English National Opera, Teatro Real Madrid, and the Bolshoi Theatre in The Indian Queen; and Opera Theatre of Saint Louis for the world premiere of Terence Blanchard’s Fire Shut Up in My Bones.

In concert, she has collaborated with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, London’s Philharmonia Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, NHK Symphony, and London Symphony Orchestra. At Ojai Music Festival, she premiered Josephine Baker: A Portrait, which grew into Perle Noire: Meditations for Joséphine, a work conceived in collaboration with Peter Sellars and written for her by Tyshawn Sorey and Claudia Rankine.

Ms. Bullock’s discography includes Doctor Atomic with John Adams and the BBC Symphony Orchestra and West Side Story with Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony, both of which were Grammy-nominated. She was born in Saint Louis and holds degrees from the Eastman School of Music, Bard College Conservatory’s Graduate Vocal Arts Program, and the Juilliard School.
