CRISTIAN MĂCELARU CONDUCTS SHOSTAKOVICH
April 21, 22 & 23, 2023
Overview
Wynton Marsalis blends jazz, ragtime, and spirituals in his Blues Symphony, a powerful celebration of Black history and folklore. SF Symphony English horn player Russ de Luna stars in Outi Tarkiainen’s Milky Ways, a celestial and hypnotic work that portrays life at its grandest and most miniscule. Led by Cristian Măcelaru, the program concludes with Dmitri Shostakovich’s First Symphony, a youthful piece of charming brashness and madcap action.

Concert Extras
A pre-concert Q&A with composer Outi Tarkiainen will be presented from the stage one hour before the concert on April 21 from 6:30–7:00pm. Free to all ticketholders.
