San Francisco Symphony Celebrates Bassist Chris Gilbert, Who Retires in Summer 2025

SAN FRANCISCO, CA—The San Francisco Symphony congratulates bassist Chris Gilbert, who retires this summer at the end of the 2024–25 season after 47 years of service. His final concert as a member of the Orchestra will take place August 3.

A native of St. Louis, bassist Chris Gilbert studied with Henry Loew at the University of Southern Illinois for two years and at the St. Louis Conservatory for a year. He was a substitute musician with the San Francisco Symphony in the 1978–79 season before joining the Orchestra as a permanent member in December 1979, under Edo de Waart.
