Since 1978, John Adams and the San Francisco Symphony have shared a long and productive history—which means that Adams has also had a long association with the YO. On Sunday, March 16, 2:00pm at Davies Symphony Hall, the association continues when the YO performs Adams' Common Tones in Simple Time at its second subscription concert of the season. Common Tones in Simple Time was first performed in its final version by the SFS and former SFS Music Director Edo de Waart in 1986. Of the upcoming performance by the YO, the YO's Wattis Foundation Music Donato Cabrera had this to say:
"This is the third time I have programed an Adams work with the YO and I am very excited that they will again have the opportunity experience this wonderful journey of musical discovery. The times that John has come to work on his music with the YO have been some of the most inspiring and memorable musical experience a young performer could hope for."
Mr. Adams' relationship with the YO has lasted more than two decades, during which he has conducted the orchestra in rehearsal many times, attended YO concerts, and offered invaluable artistic advice regarding the interpretation of his music. And, over the years, the YO has had the great privilege of presenting Adams' works to audiences both here at home and abroad:
1997-98: Alasdair Neale leads the YO in The Chairman Dances here at Davies and on tour in Paris, Teplice (Czech Republic), and Amsterdam
2000-01: Alasdair Neale leads the YO in Lollapalooza here at Davies and on tour in Moscow, Vilnius (Lithuania), Dublin and Limerick
2007-08: Benjamin Schwartz leads the YO in Lollapalooza here at Davies and on tour in Berlin
2009-10: Donato Cabrera leads the YO in The Chairman Dances here at Davies
2011-12: Donato Cabrera leads the YO in Shaker Loops here at Davies and on tour in Berlin, Regensburg, Wiesbaden, and Echternach (Luxembourg)
