Biography

Ann Murray (Auntie) was born in Dublin and studied with Frederick Cox at the Royal Manchester College of Music. Her recent opera engagements include Vaughan Williams’s The Pilgrim’s Progress and Britten’s The Turn of the Screw at English National Opera, the Countess in Tchaikovsky’s Pique Dame at Welsh National Opera, Marcellina in Le nozze di Figaro at the Royal Opera, Covent Garden, Opéra de Paris, the Glyndebourne Festival, and the Metropolitan Opera, and her debut with Los Angeles Opera in Britten’s The Turn of the Screw. She has been named an Honorary Doctor of Music by the National University of Ireland, a Kammersängerin of the Bavarian State Opera, and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music. In 2002 she was appointed an honorary Dame Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire and in 2004 she was awarded the Bavarian Order of Merit. This week’s performances mark her San Francisco Symphony debut.
