A symphony orchestra is the center of the community in which it sits, a place where all the musical currents of a city come together. As these currents move forward and change, we discover and change with them. What does moving forward sound like?
The San Francisco Symphony presents CURRENTS, a four-part video series and accompanying podcast series featuring music and conversation around the changing perspectives for symphony orchestras today; curated by Michael Morgan and musicians of the San Francisco Symphony, with further learning and exploration led by Daniel Bartholomew-Poyser.
Michael Morgan
Michael Morgan was born and raised in Washington DC. As a conductor, he is recognized worldwide for innovative and thematically rich programs that make connections between wide-ranging artists and musical cultures. A key part of the Bay Area’s artistic and community fabric for three decades, he serves as Music Director of the Oakland Symphony and Artistic Director of the Oakland Youth Orchestra. Morgan’s ties to the San Francisco Symphony stretch back to 1994; in 2022 he will present a boldly varied subscription program of works by Carlos Simon, Price, Brahms, and Franck.
Daniel Bartholomew-Poyser
From a young age, Daniel Bartholomew-Poyser turned to orchestral music to bring light, beauty, and healing to his personal and professional life. Currently Artist-in-Residence and Community Ambassador at Symphony Nova Scotia, and Principal Education Conductor and Community Ambassador of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, he also serves on the Board of Orchestras Canada. Mr. Bartholomew-Poyser was the subject of the CBC/Iron Bay Media documentary Disruptor Conductor. He regularly conducts San Francisco Symphony education concerts.
