Event Description
Chief Conductor of the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra, Principal Guest Conductor of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, and former San Francisco Symphony resident conductor James Gaffigan leads the Orchestra in Schumann’s tempestuous Fourth Symphony, one of the composer’s most extraordinary, innovative, and influential works. Vibrant, brilliant, and wild, Francisco Coll’s composition Four Iberian Miniatures receives its San Francisco Symphony premiere with violin soloist Noa Wildschut, who makes her San Francisco Symphony debut at these performances. The work is a love letter to Coll’s Spanish upbringing, evoking passionate, colorful, and sultry scenes painted by the masterful interplay between soloist and orchestra. (If it seems like Coll wants you to smile, it’s because he does.) The piece flirts with the line between serious and comic with the musicians dancing their way through four pithy movements that play with texture and rhythm. Also on the program, Haydn’s Symphony No. 88, especially revered for its cheery finale.
Open Rehearsals are working rehearsals. The pieces rehearsed are at the conductor’s discretion.
