These Concerts, A Part Of The Barbro And Bernard Osher Masterworks Series, Are Made Possible By A Generous Gift From Barbro And Bernard Osher.
Imagine twin half-brothers, one immortal, one not, born from the same mother but with different fathers. Castor and Pollux are their names, and their story, originating in ancient Greece, opens a three-week Greek mythology festival led by Esa-Pekka Salonen. Hear the San Francisco Symphony debut of Salonen’s Gemini where Pollux (the demi-god) is enveloped by shimmering strings, haunting melodies, and the mysterious glow of the immortal realm, while Castor, the son of Sparta, brings war with pounding Taiko drums and calls to battle played by the French horns. The program culminates in arguably Ravel’s most awe-inspiring work dedicated to another Greek myth, the love story of Daphnis and Chloe. The lush music is full of splashes of color and driving rhythms that propel the story forward to its breathtaking finale.
