At the top of Beethoven’s score of the Missa solemnis is the composer’s touching inscription “from the heart—may it return again to the heart.” Calling for a full orchestra, chorus, and four vocal soloists, the music defies its grand scale and offers a glimpse into Beethoven’s innermost thoughts. From the heart of a composer famously plagued by deafness and surrounded by political upheaval comes an optimistic work that celebrates art and its ability to bring humanity closer to the divine. Music Director Laureate Michael Tilson Thomas leads superstar vocalists, the San Francisco Symphony, Chorus, and a guest children’s chorus in Beethoven’s  moving masterpiece
