Vocalist Tiffany Austin combines jazz tradition with a deep affection for blues, spirituals, and contemporary soul. Born and raised in South Los Angeles, Ms. Austin grew up in a musical house. Her parents listened to soul and pop masters such as Donny Hathaway and Stevie Wonder, while her Louisiana Creole grandmother introduced her to jazz. She graduated from Los Angeles High School of the Arts and then attended Cal State Northridge as a major in creative writing, while studying classical voice. After graduating in 2004, she set out for Tokyo, Japan and found work as an R&B chanteuse before returning to the US to attend UC Berkeley’s Boalt School of Law. She began performing with bassist, composer, and bandleader Marcus Shelby on numerous projects, including a title role in Harriet’s Spirit, an opera about American abolitionist Harriet Tubman. Ms. Austin has performed with jazz luminaries including pianist Cyrus Chestnut, vibraphonist Roy Ayers, and saxophonist John Handy, and she continues to appear at illustrious venues such as Birdland and Dizzy's in New York City, SFJAZZ, and Walt Disney Hall in Los Angeles. Her sophomore release, Unbroken reached No. 16 on the Jazz Week chart. This performance marks her first appearance with the San Francisco Symphony.
