Inspired by W.H. Auden's eponymous poem, Bernstein's The Age of Anxiety is just as ripe with social commentary today as it was more than 60 years ago. Four strangers converge at a bar, and down the rabbit hole they go. Forays into a group dream, a boisterous party, booze-infused epiphanies—all narrated through the “poetic and powerful” (The Washington Post) keys of pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, who joins the San Francisco Symphony as the perfect match to this equally powerful, poetic piece.
Take a peek behind-the-scenes and experience a San Francisco Symphony performance in the making. It begins at 8:30am with coffee, doughnuts, and a half-hour informative talk at 9am. Then, watch as the conductor and musicians collaborate to bring the music to life.
