Inspired by W.H. Auden's eponymous poem, Bernstein's The Age of Anxiety is just as ripe with social commentary today as it was over 60 years ago. Four strangers converge at a bar, and down the rabbit hole they go. Forays into a group dream, a boisterous party, booze-infused epiphanies—all narrated through the “poetic and powerful” (The Washington Post) keys of pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, who joins the San Francisco Symphony as the perfect match to this equally powerful, poetic piece.
Take a peek behind-the-scenes and experience a San Francisco Symphony performance in the making. It begins at 8:30am with coffee, doughnuts, and a half-hour informative talk at 9am. Then, watch as the conductor and musicians collaborate to bring the music to life.
