Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 and Ivan the Terrible

Maestro Jurowski debuts with SFS in a program featuring music by two sons of Russia and Khatia Buniatishvili returns after her stunning premiere last season to perform Rachmaninoff’s piano concerto. Rachmaninoff suffered greatly following the failure of his first published works—happily, he emerged from his sadness to produce a concerto of ravishing beauty, which listeners have adored since. Prokofiev’s gripping work was originally the score to a film about Russia’s first Tsar, whose accomplishments were overshadowed by his own dark past. Jurowski leads the Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony Chorus, and guests in the US premiere of a new arrangement of Prokofiev’s final film score.
