Tim Day

Principal, Caroline H. Hume Chair

Tim DayTim Day has served as Principal Flute of the SFS since 2006, occupying the Caroline H. Hume Chair. Mr. Day served as principal flute with the Baltimore Symphony for twelve seasons, has been acting principal flute with the Minnesota Orchestra, and was guest principal flute with the Boston Symphony. A graduate of Oberlin Conservatory, Mr. Day joined the faculty of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music in 1987. During the summers he is on the faculty of the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara.

Robin McKee

Associate Principal, Catherine & Russell Clark Chair

Robin McKee is Associate Principal Flute of the San Francisco Symphony, occupying the Catherine & Russell Clark Chair. A native of Tulsa, OK, she began her music studies on piano before switching to flute. She later studied with Robert Willoughby at the Oberlin Conservatory. Before joining the SFS in 1984, she played piccolo in the Richmond (Virginia) Symphony and served as assistant principal flute of the Baltimore Symphony.

Linda Lukas

Alfred S. & Dede Wilsey Chair

Linda Lukas joined the San Francisco Symphony flute section in 1990, occupying the Alfred and Dede Wilsey Chair. She holds degrees from Ohio State University, University of Iowa, and the École Normale de Musique in Paris. She previously served as principal flute with the San Diego Chamber Orchestra and was a member of the San Diego Opera Orchestra. Ms. Lukas has been principal flute of the Sun Valley Summer Symphony in Idaho since 1996, and she is on the faculty of San Francisco State University.

Catherine Payne

Catherine Payne joined the San Francisco Symphony as piccolo player in 1996. Previously, she performed and recorded with the Boston Symphony as acting second flute for two seasons, and she served as principal flute of the Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra of Boston and associate principal flute and piccolo player with the Portland Symphony. She has also performed in Chicago and Europe with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and she has appeared as soloist with the SFS, Portland Symphony, and the Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra. A native of Hartford, CT, Ms. Payne graduated from both the New England Conservatory and Tufts. She is currently a flute coach for the SFS Youth Orchestra.
