This season we welcome back John Adams, a long-time Bay Area resident and friend of the SFS. Adams launched his initial creative collaboration with the SFS back in 1982. This season Adams conducts his multilingual Nativity oratorio, El Niño, composed in celebration of the millennium.
Adams’s residency will also be distinguished by an MTT-conducted performance of Harmonielehre, originally premiered by the SFS in 1985. Inspired in part by the composer’s dream about the San Francisco Bay, and requiring a larger-than-usual orchestra, this is sure to be a surprising and colorful evening. Additionally, one of the SFS Chamber Music concerts explores Adams’s more intimate works.

Only 23 years of age, pianist Yuja Wang is coming off a hugely successful year, signing an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon (her first DG album was Grammy®-nominated), and making striking artistic statements in orchestral debuts around the world. One of her signature performances came with the YouTube Symphony Orchestra, at MTT’s invitation. Her residency includes a performance of Bartók’s monumentally challenging Piano Concerto No. 2, a solo recital as part of the Great Performers Series, and a chamber music concert with SFS musicians.
