Celebrate Mexican culture with the San Francisco Symphony’s second annual Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Family Concert, conducted by rising star Alondra de la Parra. This matinee program, designed for the entire family, features The Carnival of the Animals by Saint-Saëns with soloists Kristhyan Benitez and Ana Karina Alamo on piano and Spanish language narration by author Laura Esquivel. The Orchestra will also perform works by Berkeley-born composer Gabriela Lena Frank, and composers Arturo Márquez, Ginastera, Moncayo, and Revueltas. Come early starting at 1pm for a host of pre-concert festivities for children and adults including a demonstration on how to make sugar skulls, paper flowers, and papel picado. Enjoy complimentary refreshments like Mexican hot chocolate and traditional Day of the Dead bread (pan de muerto) as you view colorful and large-scale papier-mâché figures commissioned to illustrate the characters portrayed musically in The Carnival of the Animals. Altars were created by local children and adults at the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts earlier this year and are displayed throughout the Davies Symphony Hall lobbies. For the uninitiated, bilingual docents will be on hand to provide information about the origins and traditions associated with Día de los Muertos.Half price for ages 17 and under. The Box Office will open at 10am on Sun, Nov 1. Supporting Our Community
