Mahler's Symphony No. 7

Mahler Project

"Under Michael Tilson Thomas, San Francisco's orchestra has not only become one of the most locally popular North America it has become one of the finest. And nothing better embodies it's elevated status than its Mahler cycle."

-Toronto Star

Mahler's Symphony No. 7

Grammy Award for Best Classical Album (2006)
Grammy Award for Best Orchestral Performance (2006)

Recorded live at Davies Symphony Hall, the Seventh is Mahler at his most mysterious. Sometimes called "Song of the Night," the work has a tantalizing nocturnal quality, evident in two "Nachtmusik" movements and the sonic cascades of the opening, inspired by an evening boat ride on an alpine lake. This is Mahler's ultimate challenge to performers and a fascinating journey for listeners.

Press Quotes

"Facing the most daunting challenge in their Mahler cycle, Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony have scored their greatest success. The new recording of the Seventh Symphony... is a magnificent powerhouse, the finest installment in the project since the memorable First Symphony."

-San Francisco Chronicle

"Tilson Thomas fully encompasses the wild fantasy that drives this symphony, from the struggle and delirious joy of the first movement to the wild exuberance of the finale. The transparent and rich-toned recording lets one fully appreciate the wonderful musicality and rapport within this great orchestra, and the way the nuances of Tilson Thomas harmoniously reconcile intuition and intellect."
