"The most exciting Mahler combination anywhere right now."

New Release! Mahler's Symphony No. 8 and Adagio from Symphony No. 10

Mahler 8 90x90       "one of the grand highlights of the orchestra's self-produced Mahler cycle… an astounding achievement - capacious in scope, meticulous in its attention to detail and bristling with vocal, instrumental and dramatic delights." — San Francisco Chronicle

Mahler Project Recordings

Launched in 2001, the San Francisco Symphony and Music Director Michael Tilson Thomas’s series of critically acclaimed Gustav Mahler symphony recordings are issued on our in-house recording label SFS Media™. The first U.S. orchestra to form its own label, the San Francisco Symphony has recorded all of the Mahler symphonies, the Adagio from the unfinished Tenth Symphony, Kindertotenlieder and Das Lied von der Erde and released a re-mastered recording of Das klagende Lied. Additional works still to be released include Mahler’s Rückert Lieder, Songs Of A Wayfarer (Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen) and Des Knaben Wunderhorn. This future album of Mahler’s works for voice and orchestra will complete the project in 2010.

SFS Media’s Mahler series has sold over 130,000 units worldwide and has earned international critical acclaim. The Mahler cycle has received a total of four Grammy® Awards and six Grammy® nominations. The Orchestra’s recording of Symphony No. 7 received two 2006 Grammy® Awards in the categories of Best Classical Album and Best Orchestral Performance. The first recording, Mahler’s Symphony No. 6, released in 2002, won the Grammy® for Best Orchestral Performance, and was also nominated for Best Classical Album. Mahler’s Symphony No. 3 and Kindertotenlieder, featuring mezzo-soprano Michelle DeYoung, the women of the SFS Chorus, the San Francisco Girls Chorus and the Pacific Boy Choir, won Best Classical Album in 2003, and Mahler’s Symphony No. 4, with soprano Laura Claycomb, was nominated for Best Surround Sound Album in 2004.
