Youth Orchestra
The mission of the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra is to provide the finest orchestral training, tuition-free, to young musicians at the pre-professional level and to enrich the cultural life of the community by presenting music at the highest level of artistic achievement.
The San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra (SFSYO) was inaugurated in the 1981-82 season, and is currently recognized throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia as one of the finest youth orchestras in the world. The SFSYO provides pre-professional orchestral training, tuition-free, to some of the Bay Area’s most talented student instrumentalists between the ages of twelve and twenty. The YO performs in Davies Symphony Hall and throughout the Bay Area, and tours internationally, performing in some of the most prestigious concert halls and music festivals in Europe and Asia.
San Francisco Symphony Resident Conductor Benjamin Shwartz leads the YO and musicians of the San Francisco Symphony provide weekly coaching.
The YO is a program maintained by the Education Department of the San Francisco Symphony. Since its inception in 1981, the youth orchestra has grown in stature to become recognized as one of the finest pre-professional training ensembles of its kind in the United States.
