Gil Shaham & the San Francisco Symphony

BRILLIANT VIOLINS

Gil Shaham returns to San Francisco to perform Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5, nicknamed “Turkish” for the dazzling ornamentation, chromaticism, and repetitive percussive elements associated, for the eighteenth century consumer, with Turkey. Described as “one of today’s preeminent violinists” (The New York Times), Shaham enjoys an internationally acclaimed career and his recordings have earned prestigious awards, including multiple Grammys, a Grand Prix du Disque, Diapason d’Or, and Gramophone Editor’s Choice.

Then hear a rare performance of Ravel’s complete grand ballet score, Daphnis et Chloé, featuring the Grammy award-winning San Francisco Symphony Chorus. Commissioned in 1909 by Paris’s avant-garde Ballet Russes, the work is Ravel’s longest and was considered by many of his contemporaries as his greatest masterpiece for orchestra. Today, the orchestra suites, which Ravel pieced together from the ballet for concert performances, are more frequently performed than the original. The powerful 120-member Symphony Chorus, conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas, showcases Ravel’s sweeping melodies and lush impressionism.
