For the American Bicentennial, John Cage delivered an ambitious commemoration. Renga spills over a vast symphonic canvas, its scale and length determined not by the composer but by the performers themselves. Renga is more than a piece. It is hypnotic, ecstatic. It is an experience that comes around all too rarely, more vital now than its boundary-shattering series of premieres in 1976.
