The fusion of jazz and the symphony orchestra takes center stage at this spectacular concert of popular hits by Bernstein, Gershwin, and Ravel. Edwin Outwater and the Orchestra are joined by the Japanese jazz virtuoso Makoto Ozone on piano for Gershwin’s iconic Rhapsody in Blue and a jazzy take on Ravel’s Boléro. Of a recent performance, the New York Times proclaimed, “Mr. Ozone gave a thrilling, virtuosic, and unabashedly personal rendition of Rhapsody in Blue that was the highlight of a Gershwin and Bernstein program.” Bernstein’s sizzling Symphonic Dances from West Side Story complete the musical fireworks for a concert that brings the sparkle of the Golden Era and the bluesy swing of Jazz to Davies Symphony Hall.
Just announced! SFS principal musicians Mark Inouye (trumpet), Scott Pingel (bass), and Jacob Nissly (percussion) will join Makoto Ozone in jazz quartet, performing with the Orchestra on two works by Ravel.
