The Symphonie fantastique, Hector Berlioz’s vividly programmatic “Episode in an Artist’s Life,” follows. Depicting a young Romantic’s obsession with his beloved, and culminating in the psychedelic, opium-induced “Dream of a Witches’ Sabbath,” Berlioz’s Fantastique remains a trailblazing feat of orchestration—a dazzling opportunity to hear the SFS fire on all cylinders.
