In the 2013-14 season, Canadian baritone Joshua Hopkins’s operatic performances include the roles of Marcello in La Bohème at the Canadian Opera Company and Schaunard in the same opera at the Metropolitan Opera. He makes debuts at Oper Frankfurt as Guglielmo in Così fan tutte and at Washington National Opera as Papageno in The Magic Flute. He sings Argante in Handel’s Rinaldo at Glyndebourne, where he appeared as the Count in Le nozze di Figaro in summer 2013. Concert performances this season include Fauré’s Requiem with the Kansas City Symphony and Messiah with the Detroit Symphony. Mr. Hopkins can be seen in recital this season with tenor Paul Appleby under the auspices of the Washington National Opera at the Kennedy Center and at Carnegie Hall with Ian Bostridge, Iestyn Davies, and pianist Julius Drake to perform the entire sequence of Britten's Canticles and the composer’s realizations of songs by Purcell.
Mr. Hopkins’s first recital disc, Let Beauty Awake, was released in 2010 on the ATMA Classique label and features songs of Barber, Bowles, Glick, and Vaughan Williams. Winner of both the Verbier Festival Academy’s 2008 Prix d’Honneur and the Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award in 2006, he won the first place prize in the Julián Gayarre International Singing Competition in 2002. Mr. Hopkins was previously a member of the Houston Grand Opera Studio. He made his San Francisco Symphony debut in 2009.
