The SFS sets two of Western music's most potent voices side by side under the expert baton of Charles Dutoit. Beethoven's Second Piano Concerto, featuring the thrilling Kirill Gerstein, served as one of the composer-virtuoso's calling cards during his early years in Vienna. Beethoven's graceful concerto is paired with a work of staggering power: Shostakovich's Tenth Symphony, composed after Stalin's death in 1953. This work is known as one of the most devastating essays in the twentieth-century symphonic literature.
