THE SAN FRANCISCO SYMPHONY PRESENTS GREAT PERFORMERS
Music America’s 2011 Instrumentalist of the Year and long-time favorite soloist of San Francisco Symphony audiences, violinist Gil Shaham returns to Davies Symphony Hall for a one-night-only recital. Deemed by Music America as “one of the foremost violinists of our time,” Shaham showcases his exquisite playing and flawless technique in explorations of William Bolcom’s Suite No. 2 for Solo Violin, written specifically for Shaham, along with Bach’s Partita No. 3 for solo violin.
“Shaham’s playing gives the sense that, for him, music is life; music sustains him. It’s music as oxygen, for the listener as well as the performer.”
—ST. LOUIS POST DISPATCH
“Given his formidable technique as well as a big, singing tone and a sunny disposition, [Gil Shaham] is hardly in danger of wearing out his welcome.”
—THE NEW YORK TIMES
“Shaham is a brilliant and passionate player, bringing a special kind of humanism to his interpretations.”

San Francisco Classical Voice profiles Gil Shaham in an interview about the pieces featured in this recital, and Shaham's recent concerto performances. Says Shaham, "Over the last seven seasons, I’ve been working on these solo Bach sonatas and partitas. These are pieces I learned as a student, and somehow never dared to perform until about seven years ago; I just thought, If I don’t start playing it now, it’s never going to get better.I just have to start doing it! Like so many others have said, besides the pleasure of hearing these pieces, there’s no greater joy than playing Bach. " Read the full interview.
