Thrilling yet moving, powerful yet tender, Dvořák’s New World Symphony is an enormously popular work sure to enthrall listeners young and old. It anchors a program focused on the music of Dvořák, whose works are often a delight of folk color and gypsy flavor. Also on the program is his enticing Cello Concerto, with its elegiac song to a lost love. French cellist Gautier Capuçon, praised by the San Francisco Chronicle for his “eloquent and tonally resplendent playing,” does the honors in the popular and plaintive concerto.
