SAN FRANCISCO, CA—The San Francisco Symphony (SFS) announces its annual Summer with the Symphony series, running July 4–29 at Davies Symphony Hall and at other outdoor locations throughout the Bay Area. This series kicks off with the SFS’s annual Fourth of July concert and fireworks spectacular presented by LiveNation at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, led by SFS Director of Summer Concerts Edwin Outwater in his fourth and final year in this role. Other SFS performances away from Davies Symphony Hall include two free concerts July 9 at Stern Grove Festival and July 23 at Pier 27 along the Embarcadero in San Francisco.

This summer, three concert programs celebrate iconic films and their scores. On July 6–7, The Music of John Williams returns with an all-new selection of the composer’s greatest works. Williams’s music will also be featured July 13–14 in a full film screening and live orchestral performance of Jaws, one of his most celebrated collaborations with director Steven Spielberg. Following its previous success, Pixar in Concert returns July 15–16 for the third time, with Resident Conductor Christian Reif leading the SFS in a special concert celebrating the music and animation of beloved Pixar films.

Other summer highlights include a special visit from the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra of Mexico, performing July 16 in a program of Mexican and American classical music, kicking off this year’s MEX AM Festival in collaboration with the Consulate General of Mexico in San Francisco. Acclaimed vocalist and American musician Rhiannon Giddens joins the SFS July 20 for Gershwin & Bernstein, an evening of American classical and roots music. Giddens, a founding member of the Grammy Award-winning group Carolina Chocolate Drops, was the 2016 winner of the Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Banjo and Bluegrass and is touring in support of her 2017 album Freedom Highway. Then on July 21, alt rock piano sensation Ben Folds collaborates with the SFS on a selection of his own music, and hits by his band the Ben Folds Five.

Classical performances featured this summer include A Night at the Moulin Rouge on July 8, featuring guest vocalist Storm Large, with selections from Bizet, Ravel, Edith Piaf, and much more. July 22, Outwater leads the SFS in a performance of Holst’s The Planets with the Women of the SFS Chorus. Then on July 27, Outwater leads a program of iconic works by Beethoven featuring the King Stephen Overture, Piano Concerto No. 5, Emperor (with pianist Orion Weiss), and Symphony No. 7. Conductor Juraj ValĨuha finishes out the summer with a thrilling Russian Program July 28-29, featuring Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition and violinist Benjamin Beilman performing Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto.
