MAREK JANOWSKI LEADS THE SAN FRANCISCO SYMPHONY IN CONCERTS FEATURING THE MUSIC OF BEETHOVEN AND PFITZNER, JANUARY 21-24 AT DAVIES SYMPHONY HALL
SF Symphony to perform Beethoven’s Symphonies No. 4 and No. 8 and Three Preludes from Pfitzner’s best-known opera, Palestrina—a first SFS performance
SAN FRANCISCO, December 30, 2015 – Marek Janowski leads the San Francisco Symphony (SFS) in concerts featuring Beethoven’s Symphonies No. 4 and No. 8 and Three Preludes from Hans Pfitzner’s best-known opera Palestrina, January 21-24 at Davies Symphony Hall. This is the SFS’s first performance of music by Pfitzner, a composer not widely performed outside of Germany. Janowski, considered an expert on Beethoven and German music, conducted an all-Beethoven concert with the San Francisco in 2011, when the SF Chronicle said “Janowski's approach to Beethoven is worth savoring.” Since his debut with the SFS in 1990, he has led the Orchestra in all the Beethoven Symphonies but Nos. 3 and 9, and additional works by the composer. He most recently conducted the SFS in 2013 in the music of Schumann and Brahms.
